Pleasanton Newcomers Club Welcomes New Members

Recent research shows that lacking social connections can be as damaging to a person's health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. The Pleasanton Newcomers Club has been helping the community build healthful social connections since 1968. The purpose of this nonprofit social club is to welcome newcomers and established residents, provide social activities, and promote friendships in the Tri-Valley area.

Members enjoy a variety of activities including monthly get-togethers, games, and book clubs; shared interest groups; community service; outdoor activities such as hiking, walking, and golf; monthly luncheons at local restaurants; day trips; and much more. New events and activities are planned throughout the year. Recent special events featured painting at Color Me Mine and a day trip to Filoli Gardens.

Those who belong to the Pleasanton Newcomers Club are united in their efforts to "enrich the lives of members while providing opportunities for fun and friendship," according to the club. "Families who have relocated to the Tri-Valley are welcome, and we have many long time members as well who have found new friends and lasting friendships."

Marsha Young, president of the Pleasanton Newcomers Club, became a member in 2014. She was among several residents who joined shortly after retirement because they wanted to make new friends. "I was recently widowed and I saw they had a walk group, and I thought why should I walk alone?" says Young, who has lived in Pleasanton since 1980.

Outsiders may be surprised at the large variety and diversity of activities that are available. Young says the club includes groups that enjoy playing the dice game Bunco, a handicrafts group, a wine club, a finance/investing group, and a group that enjoys Bocce Ball. Individuals, couples, and families are welcome to join the Pleasanton Newcomers Club, which relies on its members to organize events.

"Our club is organized by volunteer committees and board members who oversee our monthly events and make all the fun happen," notes Young.

The Pleasanton Newcomers Club has about 90 members currently. A portion of each member's dues is donated to good causes every year. Young is proud that the club's charitable donations have increased over the years. Each year the club gives to a variety of charities as well as the Pleasanton Weekly's Holiday Fund, which supports local nonprofits serving children and families in Pleasanton.

Annual membership dues are $30 for an entire family. Club events and activities are for members only. Tri-Valley residents interested in becoming members may attend any two club activities before deciding to join. Welcome coffees are hosted at members' homes on the first Wednesday of each month from 10 am to 12 pm. The host provides coffee, tea, and light refreshments.
